India being an emerging superpower has an estimated 78 million people living on the streets. As per the reports of National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty (NLCHP), more than 90 percent of dispossessed women are victims of domestic violence which results in their escaping from their homes. Others are mostly unemployed coming to the urban areas looking for suitable jobs and the rest are suffering from severe mental illnesses.
Amidst these alarming rates of homeless population there is a sign of hope for the ones leaving off the streets. The Aman Vedika: Shelter for Urban Homeless has been running for over 10 years in Hyderabad. It a NGO based organization primarily working for the rehabilitation of people living on the streets. The organization has 12 known shelters. Eight for men and four for women, there are separate shelters for children living off the streets.
