As the nation has gone into a lock down for 21 days due to the coronavirus pandemic, hoards of immigrant workers from all states have been returing to their native places on foot. Languishing images of these poor workers has been flooded in the social media, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took to Twitter to blame the central government for the massive migration of labourers and workers from tier-1 cities. In his tweet, Gandhi said, "It is a very big crime to do this to citizens."
Also attached in the tweet were two pictures of massive gatherings of migrant workers who have currently camped at various state borders outside Uttar Pradesh in an attempt to return to their respective villages. Rahul Gandhi also said, "Our brothers and sisters should at least get dignity in these times of crisis. The government should act fast to stop this from developing into a bigger situation."
Pictures and videos of thousands of such migrant workers camping at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border in Ghazipur have been doing rounds on the internet over the last few days. In an announcement on Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh government said that as many as 1,000 buses are being made available to migrant workers looking to return to their respective villages. In a tweet earlier on March 28, the office of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister said that provisions are also being made to provide food and shelter to these migrant workers.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia arrived at Ghazipur and told media outlets that provisions are being made to turn schools in the area into night shelters for these workers until the UP government provides buses for their return. Sisodia said that DTC buses are also being employed for this purpose.
The Uttar Pradesh government has claimed that these migrant workers will be ferried home to their respective villages free of cost but will be screened for the novel coronavirus first.
