Today morning the nation waited with baited breath to hear out the short video message by PM Modi. During his brief 11 minute speech he thanked the citizens for maintaining social distance amidst the 21 day lock down due to the corona virus outbreak.
He appealed to the nation for a candle light vigil on 5th April at 9 p.m. for 9 minutes. Calling this as an opportunity to come together to dispel the darkness of sickness.
The opposition parties like the Congress and NCP were the first ones to react with sarcastic tweets. While P.Chidambaram called this as a failure of economy in a series of tweets, Shahshi Tharoor made it clear that we have a photo – op Prime Minister.
Quoting their Tweets below:
@narendramodi, We will listen to you and light diyas on April 5. But, in return, please listen to us and to the wise counsel of epidemiologists and economists.
What we expected from you today was FAP II, a generous livelihood support package for the poor, including for those categories of poor who were totally ignored by @nsitharaman on 25-3-2020.
Listened to the Pradhan Showman. Nothing about how to ease people’s pain, their burdens, their financial anxieties. No vision of the future or sharing the issues he is weighing in deciding about the post-lockdown. Just a feel-good moment curated by India’s Photo-Op PrimeMinister!
Maharashtra Housing Minister and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad:
"I am not going to waste my nation's money in the oil to light any lamp, I want to support the nation in this hour of need. We have to work together to fight this situation not to light a lamp," he said.
While most of the epidomologists and psychologists have welcomed the collective move, the opposition just seems to be in loggerheads with PM Modi’s community exercise vision.
