THE DAUNTING GRASP OF ISLAMIST SPIES IN SOMALIA
A fluent campaign has been in place back by the UN against Somalia’s militant Islamists but to no avail. Their existence refuses to cease. The Somali militant Islamist group called Al Shabab ( Arabic for Youth). This group maintains close ties with Al Qaeda has regularly belted out attacks across the region. Though their presence has been reduced over the years but they continue to yield tremendous terror across Somalia and the neighbouring territories.
This group has been banned by the US and UK but they continue to garner support from neighbouring countries and have amassed a fleet of nearly 9000 fighters. Al Shabab has omnipresence across Somalia and use stealth to terrorize the people they wish to kill, recruit or fright. Al Shabab had officially withdrawn from Somalia’s capital Mogadishu but they continue to wield authority and terror over the inhabitants of that region who often recount tales of trespassing and harassment at the hands of the Islamist militants for recruitment purposes.
This militant group is primarily a Jihadist fundamentalist group that is based out of East Africa. In Somalia, it operates from the wild and have their hold over the rural parts of the Southern region. They extort money from people in the name of tax and protection money.
BBC correspondent Mary Harper recently had an ominous brush with the terror group and she recapitulates the encounter by quoting that “I tell them I am scared they know my itinerary so intimately, but they tell me not to worry as they have far more important targets than me. However, they do say I could be in "the wrong place at the wrong time" and suffer the consequences.”
Global terrorism is far more deeply rooted and terrifying than what meets the eye.
