KEJRIWAL PROPOSES FREE METRO AND DTC RIDES FOR WOMEN
The Delhi assembly elections are just round the corner, one year to go to be more exact and the incumbent chief minister of the state has unfurled a proposition for unscrapping metro and bus fares for women. In a statement issued by Arvind Kejriwal “The government is considering to waive the fare for women in DTC buses and Delhi Metro to encourage them to use public transport in view of their safety. We don’t need the Centre’s permission for this, the Delhi government will bear the cost." The said proposition shall set the Delhi government back by approximately 1600 crore rupees per year. What needs to noted is that the Delhi Metro is already incurring loses.
In the 17thLok Sabha elections, the AAP candidate Atishi had lost to Gautam Gambhir and she had stated that women safety would be their prime concern after she comes to power. The results were however very disconcerting as AAP was wiped off from all the seven Lok Sabha seats. Rupa nandy who is the head of UITP India quoted about this proposition that "First, with more women at various times of the day in buses and metros- women travellers would feel safer. Second, many informal modes of transport are unregulated and do not drive safely. Buses and metros will be much more comfortable. “ Mitali Nikore who is a known economist quoted that “"I think this is a path breaking move”
This decision if implemented would definitely increase the women traffic on public transport and that would be positive change. Currently 33 percent of the metro commuters in Delhi are female and this number is expected to go up after the proposition comes through.
