Vizag which is a condensed name for Vishakhapatnam is all set to become the first Indian city to introduce the concept of sea pools. Sea pools are basically salt water swimming pools adjacent to natural oceans which have all the benefits of being in the pool but are relatively safer than swimming in open oceans. The concept of sea pools has been prevalent in various parts of the world like Cornwall (England), Sydney and others. The main purpose of sea pools is to curb the number of deaths due to drowning.
India is going to find its first sea pool in Vizag. There have been various incidents that have prompted this decision. In 2014, there were three deaths in the region due to drowning. Approximately 465 people have drowned in Vizag in the last 10 years. The staggering number has further pushed the authorities to take up this project on priority basis. The creation of sea pools is believed to pose as a viable solution to drowning and it shall enable the families and the children to enjoy at the beach without being scared.
The San Alfonso Del Mar in Chile is a well known sea pool and has been frequented by visitors from all over the world. Another famous sea pool is the Bondi beach in Sydney. The sea pool in Vizag is expected to stretch across a length of 23 kms and shall be situated in Rushikonda, Mangamaripeta, Sagaranagar and Lawson’s Bay. These 4 pilot projects shall be undertaken by Vishakhapatnam Municipal council and Andhra Pradesh tourism board.
